Fluorescent bulbs supply efficient lighting to homes and business, and because of the savings in energy cost they are being used more. For all the benefits they provide society, fluorescent bulbs contain mercury and cannot be disposed of like other light bulbs. Many people may not understand the issues or the laws governing the disposal of fluorescent bulbs in their community. In California fluorescent bulbs are considered a “Universal Waste” and it’s illegal to dump fluorescent bulbs in the trash.

In general we believe people have become much more environmentally aware, thus recycling efforts have picked up in San Diego County. With our landfill height limits being increased and not many options for new places to build landfills, the time is now to begin proper disposal of items in a responsible manner – through recycling. One of the most used and common household appliance is the microwave oven, with their compact size many people decide to simply throw them away into the trash can, along roadsides, or numerous other places they don’t belong. Since microwaves are considered universal waste in California it is illegal to dispose of a microwave through the normal trash.
