Recycling Television –

Recycle Your Television Set If It’s Not Working

If there is one thing that has become ubiquitous in modern society, it’s the television. However, like everything else in life, that television is eventually going to die. When it does, you can’t just set it out on the curb for the garbage service to take away. Most cities and towns have banned television sets from the landfill because of the toxic substances used in their construction. What should you do? Recycling that broken television set is the answer.

Why Can’t Television
Sets Go to the Landfill?

Sets Go to the Landfill?
You’ll find that your old television set probably can’t go to the landfill. This is because it contains a significant number of toxic substances. Old-style tube televisions can contain several pounds of lead, for instance. Lead is a metal that shields against radiation (produced by your TV), but it is also highly toxic. Exposure to lead can cause damage to the nervous system and even death. Newer HD TVs also contain toxic chemicals, such as mercury. None of these substances can go into landfills, because they can leach into the ground and water, causing contamination.

Why Recycle Your Television?

Even if your television is not functioning, you can recycle it. Old TVs are often broken up for their components, which can then be reused. For instance, the lead in old tube television sets can be reclaimed and reused in applications for shielding against radiation (x-ray shields, etc.). Mercury can be reclaimed and reused. Even the plastic in the TV’s housing can be reused to reduce the demand for raw materials.

Choose Your Company Wisely

Not all recycling companies offer television recycling, and of those that do, not all firms are ethical. You’ll need to make sure that you choose a reputable company to take your old television set off your hands.
